MOORE PARK BEST PAIRS
ROSS AND ALDRIDGE DOMINATE
Larry Ross, the current Burt Munro Speedway Champion paired up with the NZ Under 21 Champion, Andrew Aldridge to win the Best Pairs Title for 2007. Only Aldridge could foot it with Ross, the former 9 time NZ Champion. Now 53 years old, Ross set the bench mark for the younger riders to aspire to. The team mates scored maximum points through out the heats, 21 a piece. They out scored the defending best pairs team by 7 to 2 in the winner take all final. Only the defending partner, Andrew Tree looked likely to challenge them, but Ross and Aldridge had the track well and truly blocked riding side by side in some of the best team riding seen in Christchurch in many years. Grant Tregoning, Tree’s partner suffered from early mechanical problems but came back into the points when borrowing Graham Wilson’s bike. Sean Cox started slowly but scored 17 of a maximum of 24 available through heat racing. Matt Smith, a B grade rider came in to partner Cox for the unavailable John Tuffley. Young Karl Bagshaw withdrew and missed one heat with a stater problem but came back picking up 12 points splitting the other team partners in several races. A good ride first time up in the Moore Park A grade field.
Support racing in the B grade saw Larry’s son John make his debut and win from the veteran Craig Blackett and 15 year old Cory Lang. Ross, dedicated to the sealed circuit racing, is also competitive in Motor Cross and displayed his natural talent on one of Larry’s uprights. “Dads looking after the bikes and I’m here for a bit of fun. Racing involves balance, throttle control and fitness and it all complements my road racing” Ross said. He was hounded by Blackett in several heats as they shared the victories 3 to 2 in Ross’s favour.
Chris Harris won the C grade from Quentin Wearing and Kenny Williams in his come back meeting. A boost for Harris’s confidence and with more racing further improvement will be achieved.
Junior racing was won by Anthony Knowles from Ryan Moss and Adam Wilson. Knowles was presented the race day achievement cup chosen and presented by Ronnie Moore. Both Knowles and Moss demonstrated the last JRM 250 bikes, a class NZ would like to see established for competent juniors before they go senior. Moss struggled on the 200 bike but really looked at home on the special purpose more powerful full sized racing machine.
BATTLE OF THE TWINS SIDE CAR TITLE
The Moore Park round of the Battle Of The Twins win went to Kevin Mc Donald and Karl Hosie from Invercargill. They won three of the five races but were lucky to come away uninjured in race four. McDonald’s kill switch faltered midway through the turn and they slowed in front of a rapidly closing Nigel Payton and Chris Harper. Harper managed to scrub off enough speed before they made contact. Hosie received minor leg injuries but was able to continue in the later races. Liam Stockman and Blair Lock finished second but were the leading combination before the final heat. Unfortunately they came unstuck exiting turn two while in second place before spinning in field. They rejoined but trailed the field home only picking up one point. Had they moved up one more place they would have forced a run off. Payton finished third from Josh Wilson and Darren Butt.
