Heat 1
Karl Bagshaw, Ryan Moss, Kody Tocher, Dylan Hancock DNS
Result was protested.
Bikes were sent out onto track with water truck finishing its preparation, so the riders circulated a few times before race got underway. Then Dylan Hancock had trouble starting and was on 2 minutes, all the time the other 3 riders were at the line with bikes running. Finally Dylan Hancock went onto in field and race got underway. Kody Tocher was leading until entering 3rd bend on final lap when he ran out of fuel. With results as above.
He came in and put in a protest saying the riders had been put out to early and due to this he ran out of fuel. This was a successful protest and the race was re-run. (In my opinion, this should never of happened all the riders had enough time to cut there engines and return to refuel if they had wanted. No other riders ran out of fuel.) Had the rerun not of occured Karl Bagshaw would have made the finals not Kody Tocher.
Heat 1 Rerun
Kody Tocher, Ryan Moss, Karl Bagshaw EF
Heat 2
Jade Mudgway, Sean Mason, Chris Jennings, Josh O'Dougherty
Heat 3
Grant Tregoning, Jamie Moohan, Michael Patey, Hayden Bagshaw, Ryan Bagshaw EF
Heat 4
Jamie Moohan, Michael Patey, Hayden Bagshaw, Chris Jennings
Heat 5
Jade Mudgway, Sean Mason, Ryan Bagshaw, Ryan Moss DNS
Another protest. The rerun of Heat 1 took place between heat 4 and 5, so Ryan Moss had to race in the Heat 1 rerun then come out in the next race Heat 5. Although heat 5 was directly after the rerun there was a delay. The other 3 riders were at the start line and the pit gate was closed. After it was closed Ryan Moss arrived at the gate to go out. When told he couldn't go out onto the track as the gate was shut and the other riders were under starters orders, he complained he should be on two minutes, he was reminded he needed to be on the track to call two minutes. The race went ahead. Ryan Moss put in a protest, complaining he was in the rerun heat 1, which wasn't his fault it was rerun and that he needed time to refuel, change some things on his bike etc. Again this was a successful protest and the heat was rerun.
(Again, in my opinion, He was at the gate late for whatever reason when it was shut, someone else said they did see him off to the side of the chute and thought it was a case of not being with it when the others went out. I dont think it should have been rerun)Again had the rerun not of occured Sean Mason would have made the finals not Ryan Moss.
Heat 5 Rerun
Jade Mudgway, Ryan Bagshaw, Ryan Moss, Sean Mason broke a primary chain on 4th bend of last lap while in a comfortable second place.
Heat 6
Grant Tregoning, Cody Tocher, Josh O'Dougherty, Karl Bagshaw
6 qualifying heats gave each rider 2 heats, with the top 6 going into a 3 race final.
Points in the 6 qualifying heats 4-3-2-1-0 some races had 5 some 4 in a race.
The three race finals points were 5-4-3-2-1-0
Race 1
Tregoning, Tocher, Moohan, Patey, Moss, Mudgway broke a primary chain on last bend while comfotably in lead.
Race 2
Tregoning, Tocher, Mudgway, Patey, Moss, Moohan EF on begining of 4th lap. Mudgway changed to his other bike while the primary chain was being replaced, he was left at the start and was 80 metres behind when he did go, reason loose throttle, but did make up 3 places with his thumb holding the throttle onto the handlebars.
Race 3
Moohan, Tregoning, Tocher, Patey, Moss, Mudgway broke another primary chain. Mudgway again lead until coming out of the final bend to have another chain break. Tregoning was in third and Tocher fourth knowing they only had to finish to come 1st and 2nd in championship, Mudgway had to finish infront of Moohan for 3rd. But it wasn't his night and another breakdown while leading put him out of the running.
2 Grant Tregoning 5, 5, 4 = 14 1st place
6 Jamie Moohan 3, EF, 5 = 8 3rd place
7 Jade Mudgway EF, 3, EF = 3
10 Kody Tocher 4, 4, 3 = 11 2nd place
12 Michael Patey 2, 2, 2 = 6
13 Ryan Moss 1, 1, 1 = 3
NZ under 21 Champion Grant Tregoning
In my opinion,
Best rider of the night was Jade Mudgway and had things not gone from bad to worse in the finals he would have won.
Michael Patey was the biggest surprise, only moving up from juniors this season this was about his 4th meeting on a 500cc.
Luckiest riders, Kody Tocher and Ryan Moss, and although I didn't agree with the outcome of the protests, I think we all learnt a lesson in how never to give up, and they made the most of their chances, so well done.
Unluckiest riders apart from Jade, Sean Mason and Karl Bagshaw both had good races that would have put them though to the finals only to have to go back in a re run, and have problems the second time around.
Ivan Mauger will pick two riders to represent NZ in the World Junior (U21) Speedway Qualifiers mid year in Europe.
2 Grant Tregoning 4, 4 = 8
