The Scunthorpe Saints produced another gutsy performance on Sunday afternoon before going down 54-36 to the Rye House Cobras. The result could easily have been a lot closer with heat 11 proving pivotal. Captain Byron Bekker was taking a tactical ride and it looked like Stuart Parnaby was going to join him for an 8-1 heat advantage only for Parnaby to make a mistake and Bekker to suffer a mystery engine problem. It effectively produced an eleven-point swing and there was no way back for the Saints.
A closer score at that point might have seen the on-form reserve Gary Irving take extra rides in an attempt to grab victory but it wasn’t to be. Instead the Saints side will be eyeing up next Sunday’s meeting at Sittingbourne for the elusive away win that will strengthen their chances of making the league title playoffs. The Saints got off to a poor start and were 13-5 down after three races but an unexpected 5-1 from Mike Pickering and Ricky Scarboro in heat 4 halved the deficit before Byron Bekker combined with Stuart Parnaby to fill the minor places in heat 5. Bekker did chase the impressive Halsey, who had registered 5+3 in the preceding Premier League meeting, all the way to the line whilst Parnaby rode well to keep the ever-pressing Andrew Aldridge at bay.
The Saints were also filling the minor places two races later but after contact between Scott Richardson and Gary Cottham the referee ordered a re-start. Second time around the home pairing made no mistake and the gap was suddenly twelve. Two of the recent additions to the Saints squad, Stuart Parnaby and Mike Pickering, combined for a 5-1 over the previously unbeaten Rob Smith and Daniel Greenwood but the Cobras recorded a 5-1 of their own in heat 9.
Scott Richardson and Stuart Parnaby kept Rob Smith at the back in heat 10 but as already mentioned the much anticipated tactical ride didn’t work to plan in heat 11 and the Cobras were suddenly sixteen points to the good. The race of the day as far as the Saints were concerned saw Scott Richardson pass Danny Halsey at the end of the first lap in heat 12 to join Gary Irving for an impressive 5-1 but there was no stopping the Rye House reserve Gary Cottham. He was won the last three races to record an incredible seven ride paid maximum (19+2) and he currently looks like the next rider who will progress through the club into the Premier League. However, it did look like Byron Bekker had spoilt his maximum in Heat 15 until he shed a chain and had to push in for nearly a lap to claim third place. With the crowd and his team-mates cheering him on his incredible effort typified the fighting spirit that is now prevalent within the Saints camp.
After the meeting the Saints top scorer Gary Irving reflected on his first visit to Rye House “I had a good meeting really. I’ve never been here before but I just tried to make some good starts for a change and get out in front. I could have got more points if I’d not come off” whilst Stuart Parnaby confirmed he was enjoying being back in competitive speedway after a fifteen year gap “I’m getting better. I made a mess of my first race. I just didn’t ride it hard enough. I should have won that but I’m enjoying it, apart from being knocked off. I got a win and the team spirit is really good. They’re all good blokes and I’ve really enjoyed it. Everyone puts their all in. We didn’t win it but we’ll get there”.
The Saints are in Conference League action again next Sunday, 6th July (start time midday), when they visit the Sittingbourne Crusaders whilst the next action at the Eddie Wright Raceway sees the Premier League Scorpions in league action this Friday, 4th July (start time 7.30pm) against the Berwick Bandits.
