ISLANDERS BOOSTED BY HOLDER ALL CLEAR...
The Wightlink Islanders have been boosted by the news that in-form Australian reserve James Holder has been given the go ahead to carry on riding and, contrary to his and the club's expectations earlier in week, he will be travelling north with the rest of the team and riding in tomorrow night's league match at Edinburgh and in the first leg of the KO Cup quarter final at Workington on Saturday.
It had been expected that a visit to his local hospital in Poole yesterday would lead to specialists telling him that he would need an operation to repair the bone in his hand that he broke during the recent home cup match against Sheffield.
Instead, the medics told him that X-rays showed that the injury was nigh on healed and that, provided he strapped the hand suitably, they could see no reason why he shouldn't carry on riding.
"It's great news," he said, "because the last thing I wanted was to have to have time off from racing especially as we two vital matches this weekend and another home match next Tuesday.
CAN THE MONARCHS BE DETHRONED?
Tomorrow night the Wightlink Islanders face a daunting task as they face the Edinburgh Monarchs at their Powderhall home in the Scottish capital for the Scots are currently lying third in the league table and have won all three of their home matches so far.
"A difficult match for sure," said Wightlink Islanders co-promoter Dave Pavitt, "but given the fact that no one expects us to win his one, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain and we'll be going into the meeting in positive mood.
UP FOR THE CUP...
Following tomorrow night's match at Edinburgh, after an overnight stay the Wightlink Islanders will move onto Workington in Cumbria where on Saturday night they will come face to face with the local side in the first leg of their KO Cup quarter-final clash. And co-promoter Dave Pavitt has impressed on his side that every point they score may well prove vital.
"Naturally we are going there with the intention of winning the match on the night," he said, "but with our home leg to come a week next Tuesday (June 17), if we don't win at Workington the aim will be to keep the scores as close as possible to make our task in the return as easy as possible."
NEXT TUESDAY AT SMALLBROOK...
Next Tuesday's visitors to the island will be Birmingham, another club with injury woes at present like ourselves for they witnessed Welsh skipper Phil Morris and youngster Adam Roynon taken to hospital after a crash in the opening heat of their away match at Hertfordshire club Rye House on Saturday.
Morris broke a shoulder whilst Roynon sustained a broken right leg and, of course, neither will ride in next Tuesday's match at Smallbrook and all of us Wightlink Islanders fans will be keeping our fingers (and everything else!) crossed that we don't pick up any further injuries in our two away matches this weekend.
