With Press Day now announced as Thursday March 6th at 11am at Rye House Stadium, Hoddesdon, preparations for the new season in the 17 strong Premier League are in full swing.
The two new members of the Silver Ski Rockets, Robert Mear and Danny Betson have joined Luke Bowen in regular training sessions at both Sittingbourne and Eastbourne speedway tracks. These three have become not only good friends but also huge rivals in the battle to prove which of them is to become top of the trio. While Luke starts the season in the main body of the team both Mear and Betson are keen to grab that position.
The full line-up in riding order will be as follows:
1. Chis Neath (capt)
2. Luke Bowen
3. Tai Woffinden
4. Tommy Allen
5. Stefan Ekberg
6. Danny Betson
7. Robert Mear
Team Manager will remain as in the last 8 seasons, John Sampford.
Tommy Allen has spent most of the winter helping in the stadium with various items of improvement including the erection of a new tea and coffee bar near the Pits entrance and new wider and easier access steps to the North End terracing. He has also been a main mover in the preparation of a new workshop for the use of Stefan Ekberg the Rockets’ Swedish star.
Also sharing that workshop will be new signing, Andrew Aldridge from New Zealand. He arrives in early March to join the Rye House Conference team. His aim is to prove himself worthy of a place in the senior Rockets side and judging by his recent record in his homeland, his pedigree is good enough to do so. Initially he will help to prepare Ekberg’s machines and in return the Swedish speedstar will help Andrew to progress.
“It bodes well for the future of our club that such liaisons exist, Stefan’s huge experience and expertise cannot help but benefit the club as a whole and in this case young Andrew in particular”. Said promoter Len Silver in recent comments.
Tai Woffinden has just returned from a challenging training week in Poland which he found exhausting but, he believes, very good for preparation for the first meeting of the Rockets’ season which is at Reading on March 10th. The return match and season opener at Hoddesdon is on Saturday March 15th when a bumper crowd is expected.
Chris Neath, skipper of the side, is currently enjoying a pre-season break with his family in Australia and he arrives back in U.K on March 5th just in time for Press Day.
The Rye House Conference team now have a new name, the Pocket Rockets, and a fresh sponsor is sought to help the youngster’s progress.
The Premier Trophy competition is staged as a season opener with four sections split geographically. The Rockets are, arguably, in the toughest section which includes Birmingham (now including ex-Rocket Adam Roynon) Kings Lynn and Mildenhall, all pre-season favourites for Championship honours.
“Our record in this competition is an enviable one” said Len Silver, “But this year we will be stretched to the limit because the aggregate bonus point no long exists and the emphasis is on performances away from home. However with Michael Lee giving his expert technical assistance I think the Rockets can rise to the challenge”
