Fourteen riders contested this very entertaining meeting with Kiwi import Jack Strong unable to take his spot due to injury.
Two riders were making their debut at the Gold Coast, tiny Brandon Coglan and Scott Schofield who had made the journey from Gladstone.
With three rounds of heats prior to the commencement of the main program there were several standouts, these included the ever improving duo of Mathew Day and Harley Brigden, Harley in particular was riding very well in his new kevlars.
After five rounds of heats the four finalists were Nick Morris (14), Jake Moore (13), Mathew Day (13) Harley Brigden (12).
Harley had four wins and a fall and actually tied on points with Jake Allen, however he had defeated Jake in the heats so just made the cut.
Others to impress on the night were multi Australian dirt track champion Zaine Kennedy who is always amongst the action with his daredevil style and Grafton's Josh Slokee who has a very neat and tidy style. Its only a matter of time before these two younger riders make a serious challenge for the top spots.
The final was a very good race, Nick Morris made an absolute flyer from the inside gate and ran out an easy winner but there was one hell of a battle for the minor spots, Mathew was on gate two, Jake on three and Harley on four and it was Harley who worked his way through to take second with Mathew third and Jake who was suffering from the flu in fourth.
Multi World Champion Ivan Mauger watched several of the junior heats from the infield and presented trophies to the placegetters.
Fifteen year old Darcy Ward had his first laps on the 500 and looked very fast and comfortable. Darcy spent time in England after the Youth World Cup in Poland and put in some valuable laps at a few different tracks including Kings Lynn where he shared some track time with another former Queensland junior Josh Grajczonek.
Next night meeting at the Gold Coast is the Dave Booth Memorial on 13th October, this meeting with double up as a qualifyer for the Queensland Championship, with the top eight from South East Queensland going through to the final on 8th December.
