According to Ove Fundin - perhaps the greatest Russian speedway rider is very ill at present. From his latest newsletter from his web site he says: "Among all the news from Russia Igor (Kalashnik) told me was the sad story of the greatest ever Russian rider, Igor Plechanov, he is still very ill in his home town Ufa. I'm sure that Plechanow's many admirers wish him well, as I do. Ove." Ove said that when Igor attended the WSRA dinner a few years back he had to travel for 3 days on a train just to get to the nearest airport for his flight to the UK. I found him a most charming and very likeable man even though we both had language problem. from Jim Blanchard on www.speedway-forum.co.uksee Ove's newsletter in full at freespace.virgin.net/ove.fundin/news.htm

Yes, it's sad that Igor is so poorly. His home is in the Ural Mountains and it did take three days to get to Moscow to fly to England for the VSRA Dinner. I know he was well-entertained as were his grandson and Igor Kalasnik, the interpreter, by Past President Reg Fearman and his wife Eileen who in the week after the Dinner, looked after them in Henley on Thames for just over a week taking them to the National Motor Cycle Museum at the NEC, Windsor Castle, The London Eye, Reading Speedway and many other historical places.
