I remember the legendary George Mudgway coming to the UK in 1947 and riding for Bradford. I have also read the in-depth analysis on the Bob Andrews' forum about George's racing career.
As a matter of interest, are Jade, Steve and Cody Mudgway related in anyway to him?

I remember George Mudgway very well. You are quite right, Johnnie Hoskins signed him for Bradford and advertised him as the first Maori speedway rider. I knew George personally - a great guy - died far too early. He was the starter at Western Springs when it was a piece of elastic pulled across the track. You watched George's eye and when he winked, you dropped the clutch !!! I don't believe Jade, Steve or Cody are related. He certainly had no children by his marriage although he does have a brother. I will check with him.

George arrived in Bradford with Harold Fairhurst who raced in the UK for a few seasons and also raced at Western Springs. Harold a coal miner was exceptionally strong, it is said he could pick up a speedway machine and hold it head high.

Hi guys---new member here from Auckland. Was an Odsal supporter in the old days. Amongst my bits and pieces I have a couple of old photos of George, taken probably in 1947. One is a head and shoulders shot and the other is with the Odsal team with guys like Alec Statham, Max Grosskreutz, Oliver Hart and Ernie Price and a few others. If anyone would like a copy send me a pm with an email address and I'll pass them on. ps just found this site while browsing a UK site.Looks good-just not enough fans have found it yet. cheers.
