Meeting abandoned due to heavy rain
Aggregate Score Weymouth Wildcats 71 – 100 Isle of Wight Islanders
Friday the thirteenth certainly was an unlucky night for the Wildcats as they went down 32-49 to the Isle of Wight in the first inter league challenge match at the Wessex for many years. The meeting had to be abandoned after thirteen heats had been run due to the rain that had started to fall after the eighth heat and was showing no sign of abating. That wasn’t the worst of it though, Nathan Irwin sustained heavy bruising to his foot when his bike landed on him after flipping at the start in heat nine and David Mason took a nasty tumble in heat thirteen when he ran wide on the last lap getting caught up in the fence and injuring his hand in the process.
The Isle of Wight’s big hitters, Jason Bunyan, Cory Gathercole and Krzysztof Stojanowski certainly didn’t take long to adapt from the their big home track to the tight Wessex circuit, dropping only one point between them all night to an opposing rider. They weren’t the only visiting riders giving the Wildcats a headache though Gary Cottham certainly seems to be taking a liking to the Wildcats track as he racked up 10+2 from his five rides at reserve.
The meeting started with Jason Bunyan in an impressive tapes to flag victory, which was repeated by Cottham in the second and Gathercole in heat three with team-mate Johnson following him home, recording the visitors first heat maximum of the night and breaking the deadlock from the first two drawn heats.
Karl Mason rode a fantastic first lap in heat four to pass both of the fast starting Islanders, a lead that he held for the remainder of the race to score the Wildcats only heat win of the night.
Heat five and Jason Bunyan was out front again but the real scrap was between Cottham and Smart for second. Smart missed the gate completely exiting turn two last. Not to be beaten he passed team mate Nathan Irwin at the end of the first lap and began to chase down Cottham, catching him on the next lap but was unable to find a way past. Heat six was a drawn affair with Stojanowski taking it from the gate.
Karl Mason was at it again in heat seven, harassing Cory Gathercole for the lead in some very close racing in the opening laps of the heat. Jay Herne took a tactical substitute ride in heat eight. Starting fifteen metres back he managed to overhaul Harland Cook but team-mate Day appeared to forget the tactical ride and didn’t let his partner through leaving the pairing to pick up just the four points between them, enough for the hosts first heat advantage of the night.
Heat nine had to be re-run after Nathan Irwin flipped at the start, Stojanowski won the re-run. Smart again missed the gate emerging from turn two second he had no answer for the super quick pole. Heat ten was won by Gathercole followed home by Johnson recording another maximum for the visitors, their third of the evening. This put the Wildcats more than ten points down allowing Karl Mason to come out for heat eleven as a tactical ride. Bunyan again took the win but with Mason and Herne packing in behind the Wildcats recorded their second heat advantage of the night.
Cory Gathercole recorded his fourth win in the twelfth giving him a twelve point maximum on the night although Lee Smart was trying everything in second place to catch the Islanders number three but with the rain still falling and the track getting greasy he couldn’t quite get close enough to mount a serious challenge for the lead.
It looked like the Islanders were heading for another maximum in heat thirteen until David Mason managed to pass Jason Bunyan at the end of the first lap, something no Wildcat had managed all night. Mason held the place right up to the last lap when Bunyan got back through on the inside after he ran wide in turn two running round against the fence before finally falling at the corner exit. The race was stopped by referee Ronnie Allen and awarded as a 5-1 to the visitors. With the rain still falling the meeting was abandoned after heat thirteen with the score at 32-49 to the Isle of Wight. Karl Mason was awarded the Wildcats Rider of the Night Trophy.
