"Aranui Speedway", first started to attend at the age of 10yrs old/1955,My Father ran/worked in the Pie Shop on turn 2, Mother hated me going, (a house proud woman), I would come home at some late hour, to bed, hair full of 'cinders',..by morning ...war;"look at the state of his pillowcase,..BLACK !!!..he's not going again, !!! if you can't keep him clean",....you can sort of get the picture of me hanging of the fence at turn 2, still in view of the Father figure from his 'look out' in the 'Pie shop' me being showered in cinders,just loving it...things that I vividly remember, Billy Phillps and his 'speedway'bike(well you would at that age,---"Dad,can I have a bike Like Billy" !!
'why not ??"),"Sail Along Silvery Moon"would play at 1/2 time, Billy's lullby song, the Water truck and Grader, in the pits after the meeting,the walking 'wounded',"see ya next Saturday night", "what about your leg ","Should be right by then !!",....and they would come back for more, prize money probably wouldn't buy a 'beer' today......Ivan Mauger,I remember by noise,in his race he would just wind that 'throttle' wide open and ride around 'full noise'my first 'Hero' (pos because my Dad knew him !!) was Ronnie Moore, If Mr Ronnie Moore was riding ,next week, I would be the 'perfect child',I had to go,how could he travel so close to the fence,stand the bike up with those handle bars and not hit the fence,that had me totally mesmerised,( then my Dad and I would catch Ronnies 'Wall of Death' act at a local country fair, that was just great standing at the top looking in ,with the whole structure shaking !!)..Midget cars, chrome,"popeye"(white with red interior)............so come on 'threaders' lets relive some great Aranui Moments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
