From Lee Morris
A fantastic day of racing at Somersby with an incredible 28 Under 16 riders, there were four no shows, so numbers were down in a few races, however this must still rank as one of the best attended and strongest Junior lineups for quite some time.
There were two pools, each using the traditional 16 rider, twenty heat format.
The top 16 riders went into quarter finals, with the top two into semis, then final.
Congratulations to Mason Campton who was unbeaten in all of his 8 heats, Justin Sedgman was also unbeaten leading up to the final but couldn't find a way past Campton.
There were some standouts apart from the finalists and they would have to include ten year old Matthew Day who rode very sensibly to get his place in the quarter finals.
Thanks to Mick Poole and his helpers, they put a big effort into the recently resurfaced track which did start to break up quite badly but was kept in reasonable condition with grading, watering and tyre packing after every round of heats.

18th August 2007 - Roy Thomsen Memorial
“Maximum Mason” Campton is the winner of the 2007 Roy Thomsen Memorial for junior speedway. The Kurri Kurri youngster went undefeated through five qualifying heats, a quarter final, a semi final and a final to win this prestigious event.
The event was a great success with 28 riders from around the country racing for the trophy. They were divided into two pools for qualifying heats with the top eight riders going into four quarter finals.
In Pool A Campton had to work hard for his wins. Two years ago, and perhaps even last year, the pressure of an event of this magnitude could have been his undoing. Mason was inclined to buckle under pressure, squandering race leads, but over time he has matured into a skilful thinking rider. This enabled him to beat one of Queensland’s top riders, Nick Morris in his second heat. Morris led early and Campton bided his time and pulled a neat inside pass. He then withstood attacks by Morris to take the win. Near disaster occurred in round 3 when Campton was passing world ranked Taylor Poole and they collided and both fell. Poole was adjudged the guilty party and excluded from the restart. Campton’s rear wheel was mangled and with no time to change it looked like he too would miss the race. Straight away the Munro team, adjacent to the Campton team in the pits, offered the use of a spare bike. It was one they had for sale and it had not even been started that morning. It must have been a good bike because Mason scored win number 3.
Other riders to progress to the quarter finals were Nick Morris (3 wins), Daniel Begley (2 wins), Taylor Poole (4 wins), Brady Kurtz (2 wins), Matthew Davies (3 wins), Brenton Barnfield (1 win) and Jake Moore.
The star of Pool B was South Australian rider Justin Sedgman who also scored a maximum in the heats. He generally had the races under control but had to work hard to beat Cowra’s Todd Kurtz and Alex Davies from Newcastle. Both of these riders also made the quarter finals but the pressure was on Davies after losing valuable points when he failed to get away from the tapes in round 3.
Clinton Dennis and Dylan Blain both made the quarter finals and they must have been exhausted. Prior to riding their five heats they had also ridden a sidecar outfit as support to the Pool A heats. Other qualifiers were Josh Munro, Ben Russell and Matthew Day.
Campton’s quarter final started with only three riders getting away from the tapes. Clinton Dennis stalled and pushed his bike infield as Campton, Alex Davies and Matthew Davies began their second lap. Alex attacked every lap but Campton held on to score win number six.
Controversy in the next race saw Josh Munro hit the deck and earn exclusion. Todd Kurtz had taken the lead with Munro in second place. Daniel Begley overcame a slow start to pass Jake Moore before putting a move on the inside of Munro at the start of the last lap. Munro barrel rolled out and Begley bagged second. Munro protested to referee Dave Mills but to no avail.
Justin Sedgman had a straightforward win over Brady Kurtz followed by Dylan Blane and Brenton Barnfield.
Taylor Poole had to contend with an aggressive Nick Morris to win his quarter final. Ben Russell and Matthew Day came third & fourth respectively. Russell, from Kurri Kurri, is a regular racer at Somersby and has shown marked improvement in the last year. Making the quarter final was a great achievement.
The semi final was make or break for Campton. The Kurtz brothers and Morris provided plenty of opposition but again it was his lightning starts that got Mason off the line and into the lead. Todd kept up with him and these two opened a small gap over the other two. Seven starts, seven wins.
The second semi final was a battle between Sedgman and Poole with Sedgman equalling Campton’s haul of seven wins. Alex Davies was third with Australian junior longtrack title holder Begley fourth.
When the tapes went up for the final Mason again made a cracking start. He eased away from Taylor Poole who then found himself under attack from Justin Sedgman. Todd Kurtz was relegated to fourth. Once past Poole Sedgman did everything he could to get past Campton. He tried inside, outside, high and low. All eyes were on these two as the laps counted down. Sedgman went deep into turns 3 & 4 on the last lap and the two riders were almost side by side. Campton got better drive, held his line and went on to his biggest win of his junior speedway career.
The Central Coast Junior Motorcycle Club are to be congratulated for an excellent meeting. The track, with a new surface, held up well. The whole event ran smoothly and was a credit to all involved. Thanks also to all the riders, many travelling hundreds of kilometres to attend, for contributing to some great junior speedway racing.
